Goodreads.com is a huge community of keen readers. As a book lover you can see which books your friends are reading and keep track of the books you are reading, have read before and are dying to read on ‘bookshelves’. The site provides personalised book recommendations, analysing an astonishing twenty billion data points to deliver specially-tailored Big Data inspiration.
And punters can use the community’s reviews to decide if a book will suit their tastes.

Wouldn’t it be lovely if self-publishing was a simple matter, a bit like magic. You write, you Kindle it, you sell, you’re famous. Listen to a lot of the talk on the subject and you’d be forgiven for thinking it’s a marketing miracle, a way to circumvent all those pesky obstacles and challenges that traditional publishing involves.
But let’s get real here. Self-publishing is usually a long-tail phenomenon, not a quick fix. Unless you’re spectacularly lucky and create an instant best-selling international hit of a blockbuster, it’s all about hard graft.
